What is the PMP certification?

The Project Management Professional (PMP)® is a globally recognised certification issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It validates your ability to lead projects using predictive, agile, and hybrid methodologies. As of 2026, the PMP is one of the most in-demand professional credentials in India and globally — appearing in the majority of senior project management job postings.

Unlike many certifications, the PMP is not purely exam-based. PMI requires real project management experience before you can even sit the test. This makes it a more credible signal to employers than certifications that require only self-study.

The 8 steps to PMP certification

Step 1: Check your eligibility

Before spending time and money on training, confirm that your experience qualifies. PMI counts experience where you led project activities — not just participated in them. You do not need a formal "Project Manager" job title. A business analyst who led cross-functional workstreams, a developer who owned a product release, or an operations manager who drove process improvement projects can all qualify.

PMI does not verify your experience upfront — but approximately 10–15% of applicants are randomly selected for audit. If audited, you need written confirmation from project supervisors or clients. Our application support helps you prepare audit-ready documentation from the start.

Step 2: Complete 35 contact hours

PMI requires 35 hours of formal project management education. The most straightforward way to fulfil this is through a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP). ATP status means PMI has audited the training provider's curriculum, materials, and instructor qualifications. A 35-hour certificate from an ATP is accepted directly by PMI in your application — without additional verification steps.

Steps 3–5: The PMI application

You apply at pmi.org. The application asks you to list your project experience in a specific format — project name, organisation, your role, start/end dates, and a brief description of what you led. PMI reviews applications within 5–10 business days and notifies you by email.

If selected for audit, you have 90 days to gather and submit documentation from supervisors confirming your experience. This is not a disqualification — it is a routine verification step. Full details are in our PMP application process guide.

Steps 6–8: Exam preparation and sitting the test

Once PMI approves your application, you have one year to schedule and sit the exam. You can book at any Pearson VUE testing centre in India — in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, and other cities — or take it online from home with ProctorU.

The exam is 180 questions over 240 minutes. Roughly 50% of questions are agile or hybrid in nature — a significant shift from older versions. Results appear on screen immediately after the exam. You receive a pass or fail result, along with a proficiency rating across each domain. PMI emails your certificate within a few days.

After certification: PDUs and renewal

PMP certification is valid for 3 years. To renew, you earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) through ongoing learning — courses, webinars, volunteering, or working as a PM.
