PMP Application Process 2026: How to Apply Step by Step

By 3FOLD Training··9 min read

Important — Effective Q4 2026

From late Q4 2026, PMI will only accept training hours from a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP). Non-ATP hours will not satisfy the 35-hour requirement. 3FOLD Training is a verified PMI ATP. ATP courses also require an 80% Knowledge Check before your certificate is issued.

The complete PMP application process — 10 steps

01

Create a PMI account

Go to pmi.org and create an account. If you are joining PMI as a member, do this during account creation — membership reduces your exam fee by $121.

02

Start a new PMP application

From your PMI dashboard, select 'Start Application' under PMP. The application is saved online and can be completed over multiple sessions within 90 days.

03

Add your education details

Enter your degree or diploma. Have a scanned copy ready in case of audit.

04

Enter your 35 contact hours

Enter your training provider details and hours. If trained by an ATP like 3FOLD, PMI automatically recognises the provider.

05

Document your project experience

List each project: name, organisation, start date, end date, your role, project description, and which ECO domain areas your work covered. Be specific — vague entries increase audit risk.

06

Review and submit

Review every section carefully before submitting. Once submitted, the application cannot be edited.

07

Wait for PMI review

PMI reviews applications within 5–10 business days. You receive an email with approval or audit notification.

08

If audited — gather documentation

You have 90 days. Collect signed supervisor/client letters for each project. Your trainer letter for 35 hours. Degree certificate.

09

Pay the exam fee

Once approved, pay the exam fee through PMI. Members: $405. Non-members: $555. You now have 1 year to schedule and sit the exam.

10

Schedule your exam

Book at a Pearson VUE test centre in India (Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, and others) or schedule online proctored with ProctorU.

How to write your project experience entries

This is where most applications are weak. PMI's application asks for a brief project description — but vague descriptions like "managed a software project" do not demonstrate leadership or ECO domain coverage. Write each project entry like this:

Example project entry:

Project: CRM Migration Project — migrated 50,000 customer records to Salesforce across 3 business units.

My role: Led cross-functional team of 8 (IT, sales ops, finance). Defined scope, created schedule baseline, managed vendor contracts, ran weekly stakeholder reviews, and controlled risks across a 7-month timeline.

ECO coverage: People (team leadership, stakeholder communication), Process (planning, scheduling, vendor management), Business Environment (executive reporting, regulatory compliance).

What to do if you are selected for audit

Being audited is not a red flag — it is a random quality check. Approximately 10–15% of applicants are selected. If you are one of them:

  • Do not panic — you have 90 days to respond
  • Contact each supervisor listed in your application and request a signed letter confirming your role and project dates
  • For freelance projects, client letters work in place of supervisor letters
  • Gather your degree certificate and 35-hour training certificate
  • Submit all documents through PMI's online audit portal — no physical mail needed

Our application support (included with enrollment) prepares your documentation to be audit-ready from the start, so nothing catches you off guard.
