What Changed on July 9, 2026
PMI released an updated Examination Content Outline (ECO) effective July 9, 2026 — the most significant exam change since January 2021. The changes reflect how the profession has evolved: more emphasis on business value, AI and sustainability integrated throughout, and a formal quality gate on training.

Domain Weighting Changes — The Biggest Shift
The Business Environment domain nearly tripled — from 8% to 26%. This is the single biggest change in the new exam. It reflects a fundamental shift in how PMI views project success: not just delivering on time and budget, but delivering real business value that aligns with organizational strategy.
What this means for you: exam questions will now more heavily test your ability to connect project decisions to business outcomes, compliance requirements, governance structures, and benefits realisation. Purely operational PM knowledge is no longer enough.
People
Still tests leadership, team motivation, conflict resolution, and stakeholder engagement. Reduced weight but remain a priority — these questions are scenario-heavy and require situational judgment.
Process
Planning, execution, monitoring, risk, procurement, quality. Both predictive and agile lenses apply. Still the largest domain but no longer dominant.
Business Environment
Strategy alignment, benefits realisation, compliance, governance, organisational change. The highest-growth area — treat it as equal preparation weight to the others.
New Question Types
The July 2026 exam adds new interactive question formats on top of what was introduced in 2021:
- Graphic questions: Read and interpret charts, graphs, or tables to select the correct answer.
- Matching: Connect items from two columns — often tools to situations, or tasks to roles.
- Point-and-click: Click on a specific element within a diagram or scenario image.
- Drag-and-drop: Carried over from 2021 — sequence steps or map items to categories.
- Multi-select: "Select all that apply" — requires all correct choices for full credit.
Your practice question bank must cover all these formats. Banks built before July 2026 will not include graphic or point-and-click types and will leave you unprepared for roughly 15–20% of the exam.
PMBOK 8th Edition — What Changed
PMBOK 8 replaces PMBOK 8 as the supporting reference for the new exam. Key shifts from PMBOK 8:
- Stronger integration of agile, hybrid, and predictive frameworks into one coherent model
- AI and sustainability formally incorporated as project management considerations
- Business value and benefits realisation given greater prominence
- More emphasis on stakeholder-driven delivery and adaptive planning

Extended Experience Look-Back: 10 Years
PMI has extended the eligible project experience window from 8 years to 10 years. This means experience from further back in your career can now be counted toward the 36-month (degree holders) or 60-month (secondary diploma holders) requirement. If you were previously borderline on experience, it is worth re-checking your eligibility under the new rule.
New Eligibility Pathway: Vocational / Trade School
Candidates with vocational or trade school qualifications at EQF Level 5 (or equivalent) now qualify under a pathway similar to the secondary diploma route. This opens PMP certification to a broader range of qualified professionals who were previously excluded by the strict degree requirement.
The Knowledge Check — New Training Requirement
From July 2026, training providers are required to administer an 80% end-of-course knowledge check before issuing a completion certificate. For 3FOLD Training, this is built into the course:

- Passing unlocks your official PMI ATP completion certificate
- The certificate is what you submit in your PMI application

ATP-Only Training Hours — Effective Q4 2026
Important: Eligibility Change Coming
From late Q4 2026, PMI will only recognise live PMP training hours completed through a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP), China REP, or an accredited academic programme. Hours completed with non-ATP providers will no longer count. If you are planning to start training soon, enrol with an ATP now to ensure your hours remain valid.
